PhD Positions in Collaborative, Distributed, and Scalable Machine Learning (m/w/d) - Group Stich

St. Ingbert, Germany

The group of Sebastian Stich works on the design and analysis of optimization methods for machine learning, with research topics ranging from decentralized and federated optimization, adaptive stochastic algorithms, and generalization in deep learning, to robustness, privacy, and security aspects of modern ML systems.

Current research directions include the ERC Consolidator Grant CollectiveMinds, which aims to make machine learning more sustainable and efficient by enabling multiple smaller models to collaborate, adapt, and forget outdated knowledge intelligently, and a DFG-funded project on distributed optimization and scalable training of deep neural networks, including transformer architectures.

PhD students can work on any of the topics spanned by the group, or on closely related areas that meaningfully connect to our research. We expect candidates to explain their research interests and their connection to the group’s activities in their cover letter.

Possible research topics include: Collaborative, federated or decentralized learning/Continual learning and knowledge sharing/Optimization algorithms for large-scale or distributed training/Robustness, fairness, and personalization in multi-agent learning/Training efficiency and communication reduction/Distributed training of transformer models

What We Offer:

  • Competitive full time-gross base salary for E13 according to the scale of the TVöD (German Federal Employment Agreement).
  • Comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance coverage, 30 days of paid vacation and a robust pension scheme.
  • Possibilities for personal and professional growth, encompassing language classes, research support, as well as extracurricular and social activities.
  • Our onboarding team will provide you with all the necessary support for a seamless and successful start to your journey with us.
  • We maintain a trustworthy, inclusive, and safe space and are looking for curious and creative new colleagues willing to learn & grow in an enjoyable and friendly team atmosphere.

What We Expect:

  • You have an excellent Master’s degree from a research-oriented institution of higher education in computer science, mathematics, statistics, or a related discipline.
  • A solid mathematical foundation (probability theory, statistics, calculus, and linear algebra) is essential.
  • Experience in optimization, machine learning, or deep learning frameworks (such as PyTorch) is highly desirable.
  • Excellent English, but no German? CISPA is an international research institute. Knowing German is really not necessary, although daily life is a bit smoother if you speak a few words and if you want to learn German, we offer free courses.

Working at CISPA:

  • We promote a flat hierarchy that encourages working together as a cohesive team and contributing one’s perspectives and ideas.
  • We offer an excellent research environment with close individual supervision, worldwide collaborations, and with significant funding for travel and equipment.
  • Our locations are in Saarbrücken and St. Ingbert, in the Saarland region with international flair (e.g., an International School and distinguished cuisine influenced by the proximity to the French border). Saarland is also known for its green spaces, parks and proximity to nature, providing opportunities for relaxation and outdoor activities.
